I’ve just come back from a long stay with my great-aunt (whose Ayurvedic skincare tips I shared here)– and this meant spending many enjoyable hours glued to Indian soap operas on channels Star Plus, Sony Entertainment Television, and Zee TV. Tonight I’ll share with you how to recreate looks worn by most of the heroines in these shows!

FACE

It’s an unspoken rule of daytime dramas around the world: go heavy on the foundation! To get the Hindi serial actress look, use MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation in a shade the suits you and layer, layer, layer. This particular foundation will function as a concealer, heavy-coverage foundation, and mattifying powder in one. Soap actresses don’t tend to wear dewy makeup; the pancake look means totally matte and completely flawless all the way.

EYES

Keep the eye makeup simple and sweet. Sweep a matte light or medium brown eyeshadow over the lids. Line the upper lashline and upper and lower waterlines with a brown eye pencil. If desired, lightly line the brown eye pencil along the lower lashline as well.

CHEEKS

Opt for feminine shades in pinks and plums, like MAC Powder Blushes in Pink Swoon and Breath of Plum. You can also use a matte bronzer (or powder a few shades darker than your skintone) to contour your cheekbones and nose, if desired.

LIPS

The heroines’ lipsticks are soft and ultimately feminine. Use whatever variation of the color pink suits your fancy; you’ll often see brown-pinks, medium pinks, nude pinks, and bright pinks on the actresses. Lipsticks to try include MAC Lipsticks in Twig, Half N Half, Modesty, Sweetie, Fast Play, Viva Glam V, and Chatterbox.

Kajol and Shahrukh Khan had sizzling chemistry in the most sensual Bollywood song of all time, “Suraj Hua Madham” from the 2001 blockbuster film “Kabhi Khushi Khabhie Gham”, also known as K3G. Mickey Contractor made Kajol look her beautiful best for this song.

The key elements to this look? Raven black hair, kohl-rimmed eyes, and gorgeous parrot-green and sunset-red saris. Sigh!

For starters, to get Kajol’s look, you’ll need to try on some green or hazel colored contacts. They’ll also off-set the darkness of the black eyeliner beautifully. Next, sweep a matte medium-brown eyeshadow (MAC Eye Shadow in Folie) over the lid and blend up past the crease, fading halfway to the brow. Using a black gel eyeliner (MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack), line your lower waterline and lower lashline. Use a smudgy black pencil (MAC Eye Kohl in Smolder) to line the upper lashline generously. Use a matte black eyeshadow (MAC Eye Shadow in Carbon) and blend it into the upper lashes. Sweep outwards just a touch to create a small winged effect. Curl lashes (apply falsies for full effect) and apply mascara.

Add a warm pink blush (MAC Powder Blush in Mocha) to your cheeks and blend upwards towards your cheekbones. Finish with a peach-brown lipstick (MAC Lipstick in Mocha). Mocha, mocha!

Basically this face, along with Rani’s very similar look in KANK, is the Karan Johar film heroine makeup standby.

I have a suspicion that Kareena Kapoor likes to have significant creative input in the makeup styling for her films. How else would she be getting film after film of trend-setting looks? Maybe it’s a force of personality thing. Here’s my interpretation of her dazzling exotic eye makeup look in the 2009 Bollywood drama-thriller “Kurbaan” co-starring Saif Ali Khan.

– After applying moisturizer, use a small brush to paint liquid concealer (MAC Select Cover-Up Concealer) over undereye circles and blemishes.

– Using a soft brush, stipple a liquid foundation (MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation) over the skin. Blend to softness.

– Apply a transparent finishing powder to mattify (MAC Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder).

– Apply a small touch of soft coral-peach blush (MAC Powder Blush in Melba) to the cheekbones.

Eyes

– Line the lower waterline with a black gel eyeliner (MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack).

– Sweep a peach-beige eyeshadow (MAC Eye Shadow in Bamboo) over the eyelids and blend upwards into the crease.

– Using the gel eyeliner, heavily line the upper and lower lashlines. Extend to form a thick wing. Next, to the upper lashes, use a fine brush to blend a bluish-black eyeshadow (MAC Eye Shadow in Nehru) neatly into the line for a hint of blue. Smudge a matte black eyeshadow (MAC Eye Shadow in Carbon) along the lower lashline and blend into the wing.

– Curl lashes and apply a thickening mascara (MAC Plush Lash Mascara).

Lips

– As per usual, apply Kareena’s stand-by peach-beige lipstick, MAC Lipstick in Cherish.

This look is great for pairing western clothes with hints of ethnic wear (jewelry, scarves, skirts, bags). The cat eye/winged eyeliner makeup gives the perfect East-Meets-West finish to the look. Enjoy!

Deepika Padukone has never looked so good as she did in her debut film, 2007’s “Om Shanti Om”, co-starring Shahrukh Khan. Deepika played the role of a 1970’s Bollywood film heroine, and did she ever look like the perfect “Dreamy Girl”! Old-fashioned Bollywood makeup is characterized by exaggerated cat eye makeup and pinky-nude lips (i.e. yesteryear actresses Helen and Hema Malini). Here’s how you can get the look for yourself.

MAC Plush Lash Mascara

MAC Lipstick in Sweetie

Face

– Apply your regular moisturizer. Use concealer (MAC Studio Finish Concealer) on your undereyes, on and around the nostrils, and to cover any blemishes. Flawless skin is crucial to pulling off this doll-face look.

– Apply a powder foundation (MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation) for a matte, medium-to-high coverage effect. Sweep your powder brush in downward strokes, or, for heavy coverage, use a sponge to apply.

– Use a powder in a shade darker than your skintone (MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural) in the hollows of your cheekbones. Blend well to produce a subtle effect.

Eyes

– Lightly line the lower waterline with a muted brown eye pencil (MAC Eye Pencil in Coffee).

– On the eyelid, apply a pink eyeshadow with subtle shimmer (MAC Eyeshadow in Expensive Pink). In the crease of the eyelid on the outer corner, apply a pinky-plum eyeshadow (MAC Eye Shadow in Plum Dressing) for a slight contour. Apply a highlighting shadow (MAC Eye Shadow in Ricepaper) to the brow bone underneath the arch of the eyebrow.

– Using a black gel eyeliner (MAC Fluidline in Blactrack), draw a thick line over your lashes. Extend the line out generously to form a wing.

– Apply false eyelashes if desired, curl lashes, and apply a thickening mascara.

Lips

– To get Deepika’s cool pink lips, try MAC Lipstick in Sweetie.

Done! This look would go great with ethnic wear- a conservative lahenga or fitted salwar- and an elaborate hairstyle for a special event or party. You could also tone down the wing of the eyeliner if you want this look for daily wear. Have fun!

If you’ve been reading our blog, you probably love makeovers. The best makeover movie of all time, “Fashion”, starred Priyanka Chopra in an award-winning role as a middle-class girl with big dreams, who makes it to the top of India’s fashion industry- only to lose herself.

By the time her makeover was complete Priyanka looked stunning; here’s how you can get the look yourself!

Face

– Normally I don’t make a point of adding a makeup primer to my breakdowns, but because this look is best suited for photoshoots and high-glamour opportunities, I’ll throw it in there. Have your makeup stay on all day and night by applying a primer (MAC Prep + Prime Skin) after your moisturizer.

– Apply concealer (MAC Select Cover-Up Concealer) on blemishes and under the eyes. Because this look has heavy smoky eye makeup, conceal well or you will look like a sleepy raccoon!

– Using a foundation brush, apply a liquid foundation (MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation) to your skin. Brush in downward strokes, like a painter. Don’t forget to blend your edges out around the jawline.

– To set your foundation and concealer, apply a mattifying transparent powder (MAC Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder).

– Apply a ginger-bronze blush powder to your cheekbones (MAC Powder Blush in Gingerly). Optional: Apply a touch of this blush to the sides of your nose near your eyes for a slight contouring effect.

Eyes

As always, PC is wearing her Freshlook Colorblends colored contacts in Green.

– Been wanting to learn how to do a winged eyeshadow makeup look? Here’s your tutorial. First line your upper and lower waterlines with a black gel eyeliner (MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack).

– Over the upper lashes, draw a thick line of black eye pencil (MAC Eye Kohl in Smolder)- do not wing this liner. Over the liner, smudge in a bluish-black eyeshadow (MAC Eye Shadow in Nehru) and blend upwards. Use an angled brush to extend the eyeshadow a half inch past the eyes at an angle that follows that of your lower lashline, as seen in the image above. Fill in the triangle and blend it into the shadow on your lids.

– On the lower lashline, dot a dark blue eye pencil (MAC Prussian Powerpoint Eye Pencil) between the lashes and smudge to create a thin line that hugs your waterline. Mix a little black eye pencil over this if you want to go darker.

– Apply a highlighting shadow (MAC Eye Shadow in Shroom) to your brow bone.

Lips

– To get Priyanka’s brown-nude lips, apply MAC Lipstick in Kinda Sexy, a matte neutral shade.

Director Madhur Bhandarkar pulled out all the stops in “Fashion” to create a stunning film with equally glamorous visuals. Even celebrity photographer Dabboo Ratnani and celebrity makeup artist Mickey Contractor made cameos in the song “Aashiyana” (at 1:23 and 2:25 respectively in the video below)!

Drool!

P.S. I am SO EXCITED for Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Heroine” starring Aishwarya Rai! It’ll be “Fashion” for the Bollywood film industry. Filming starts this June.

Actress Amrita Rao looked divine as the bride-to-be of Shahid Kapoor in the 2006 Bollywood family film “Vivah” (“Vivaah”). She played the part of the Indian bride preparing for her wedding to perfection: she was demure, conservative, beautiful, delicate. Here’s how you can get the look for yourself!

MAC Select Sheer / Loose Powder

MAC Powder Blush in Sincere

MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack

MAC Eye Shadows in Expensive Pink, Honesty, Mulch, and Antiqued

Diorshow Mascara by Christian Dior

MAC Lipsticks in Modesty and Viva Glam VI

Face

– Amrita’s makeup in Vivah is high-coverage. Use a concealer (MAC Studio Finish Concealer) to cover any blemishes or darkness. Also apply concealer to the nostrils to draw attention away from the nose.

– Apply foundation (MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation) in a stippling (dotting and swirling) motion.

– Set foundation and concealer with a sheer colored powder (MAC Select Sheer / Loose Powder).

– To the tops of your cheekbones, SPARINGLY apply a matte coppery beige-toned powder blush like MAC Powder Blush in Sincere.

Eyes

– Line the lower waterline with a black gel eyeliner (MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack).

– Amrita’s eyeshadows vary throughout the film, but the idea remains the same: apply eyeshadows in shades of pink and bronze. Use MAC Eye Shadows in Expensive Pink and Honesty paired with darker colors like MAC Eye Shadows in Mulch and Antiqued. Wear the lighter colors on the eyelid and use the darker colors on the outer third of the eyelid and in the upper crease for contouring.

– Using your black gel eyeliner, draw a generous line over your eyelashes and extend slightly beyond the upper lid to give length to the eye.

– Apply false eyelashes if desired (falsies are a big part of her look, so if you are going the whole way, don’t skip this step). Curl lashes and apply your favorite mascara (mine is Diorshow Mascara by Christian Dior).

Lips

– Amrita’s lip colors are neutral and conservative; to get her Indian bridal lips, apply a neutral pink lipstick like MAC Lipstick in Modesty (fitting name, right?), or for a darker lip, apply MAC Lipstick in Viva Glam VI, a “terracotta-plum” shade.

“Vivah” is one of my favorite films; I’ve seen it a million times and recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about traditional Indian culture. Check out the adorable song below; the entire movie is also available on Youtube with English subs.

Rani Mukherjee’s favorite makeup artist is Mickey Contractor for MAC- and I can see why. He made her look like an angel (albeit of the philandering variety) in the 2006 Bollywood film “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna”, a story of adulterous lovers directed by Karan Johar.

Rani’s look in the film is one of my all-time favorites. I particularly loved her heartbreak outfits. You know, the long trenchcoats and fur-lined jackets she wears when she is meandering through snowy fields moping over her lost beloved? Contractor gave her a muted, smoldering look throughout the movie that fit the mood of the story- it was somber and yet glamorous, soft and yet untouchable.

Here are my recommendations for replicating her look! I’ve incorporated products that Mickey Contractor informed Vogue India he loves to use for Indian smoky eye makeup looks in particular. Another great place to find information on Mickey Contractor’s likes and dislikes is this blog. Check it out!

And now, on to the breakdown…

Recommended Products:

MAC Mineralize Foundation SPF 15

MAC Select Cover-Up Concealer

MAC Select Sheer/Loose Powder

MAC Powder Blush in Mocha

MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack

MAC Eye Shadows in Folie and Carbon

MAC Plush Lash Mascara

MAC Lip Pencil in Spice

MAC Lipstick in Viva Glam V

Face

– After application of your regular moisturizer/sunscreen, use a sponge to apply your foundation (MAC Mineralize Foundation SPF 15). I recommend this cream-based foundation for its incredible hydrating effects and natural finish. This foundation looks beautiful on both young and old skin.

– Using a concealer brush, thoroughly conceal under-eye circles and blemishes with your concealer. Contractor has often said that his favorite MAC product is the MAC Select Cover-Up concealer. I personally have found this liquid concealer good for the undereyes (but I prefer a cream concealer on darkness/blemishes).

– Set the foundation and concealer with a loose powder matching your skin color (MAC Select Sheer/Loose Powder) for a mattifying effect.

– Apply a warm pink blush (MAC Powder Blush in Mocha) to the tops of your cheekbones. If you so desire, apply a small amount of bronzing powder or tan-based blush in the hollows under your cheekbones.

Eyes

– Line the upper and lower waterline with a black gel eyeliner (MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack).

– To create a smoky effect, run a small amount of a medium-dark brown eye shadow (MAC Eye Shadow in Folie) on the lower half of your eyelid. Blend very well upward. Apply a small amount of the same shadow along your lower lashline. If you have close-set eyes, keep the eyeshadow on the outer third of your eyes, further away from the inner corners.

– Line the upper lashline with the black gel eyeliner. Over the black line, smudge on a little black eye shadow (MAC Eye Shadow in Carbon) to diffuse the harshness of the look.

– Curl your lashes and apply a thickening mascara (MAC Plush Lash Mascara).

Lips

– To get Rani’s nude-pink lips, line your lips with a tan-pink lip liner (MAC Lip Pencil in Spice, described as “pink cinnamon stick”).

– Apply a “pure neutral pink” lipstick (MAC Lipstick in Viva Glam V).

Now go and face the world looking gorgeous like Rani! Wonder why half the internet is spelling “smoky” as “smokey”! And if you are up for melodrama, watch the song below!
