Here’s a special treat for the week: a Jolie Asie exclusive interview with the super spunky, super savvy Tanya Ghavri, fashion stylist to the stars! I recently got a chance to talk with Tanya about her career, what it’s like working with beauty queens and heroines, and her top fashion advice for our readers.

Tanya styled Aishwarya Rai for her interview in Verve's March 2011 issue

MegTell us about your most exciting or memorable accomplishments in styling Bollywood celebrities and/or films.

Tanya: I don’t generally think of things in terms of big or small, because I’m excited about all of the work that I do… whether it’s a fun shoot with some friends to a shoot for a high profile magazine or a film… it’s all great! But, since you’ve asked this question in particular, I would say styling Aishwarya Rai because she was my idol as a child and I looked up to her I wanted to be Miss India because she was Miss India. I was like an awe-struck girl, so styling her was like a dream come true!

It is a dream for girls who love fashion to be styling the likes of Sonam Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai. How did you get to where you are now, and what is your advice for aspiring stylists?

Tanya: Life has been very kind! Literally, I studied fashion in New York and Bombay… got all my ground at SNDT; studied fashion there and was just extremely passionate about it. I started working while I was in college, and used to bunk college sometimes to be at shoots! I don’t advise bunking but sometimes being out of the box helps (winks). Working in the fashion and film world really helped… and then I landed up working on [the Bollywood film] “Aisha” and then there was no looking back. Everything else just followed.

I would advise girls to have fun with fashion- take risks and just work really, really hard, because if you do, no one can stop you!

Tanya recently styled Sonam Kapoor in an Anita Dongre dress, Christian Dior sling bag, and Jimmy Choo peep toe heels for a rainy day at Film City. The look was featured in the Bombay Times. Click on the image for a larger view.

What was your most difficult stylist assignment to date, and how did you manage it?

Tanya: I don’t see anything as difficult… actually, if you don’t lose your fear, you’ll never enjoy your work. That’s what my parents taught me. There are times you feel doubt but eventually realize, “What’s the worst that can happen? I’ll make a mistake, and then I’ll learn.” So I can’t think of anything that’s been difficult.

What does a typical day for you look like- who do you meet, where do you go?

Tanya: A typical day for me depends on if I’m working or not. If I’m working, it’s absolutely insane. I’m always on call with designers, etc. to source, and in between meetings, and fittings with actors. If I’m not working that much then I’m researching and reading fashion blogs and books and films (Indian and international). I would really recommend to watch all kinds of films- Indian, international, foreign… it really helps opening your mind up.

Who are your favorite designers and places to buy clothes- high-end and street-buys?

Tanya: Wow! Favorite place would lots… in India, to start with, I would say: for high street Zara is a one-stop shop. Among the newer designers there is Masaba Gupta, who’s extremely talented and very well priced. Among the high-end Indian brands there is Anamika Khanna, Rajesh Pratap Singh, and Cue. They make beautiful clothes that are also wearable. [For] high-street in Bombay there is Zara, French Connection, Calvin Klein; you can find your really nice basics that are long lasting.

I would advise young girls to stop buying these Bangkok export cheap clothes and rather invest in a top from Zara because, trust me, you may spend 500 bucks more, but you’re so much more chic and it works much, much longer and doesn’t fade away! Quality over quantity: it’s the first fashion rule.

Outside India, New York is the place to shop hands down!

What is your advice for girls who are shopping on a limited budget but still want to look fashionable like a movie star?

Tanya: First of all, you don’t have to shop expensive and designer to look chic and fashionable. You could put on a simple white mul shirt with jeans or shorts. Wear your mum’s vintage necklace (old ethnic neckpiece) with a cute lil’ tan sling bag and ballet flats and you’re ready to go!

Colors on display at Colaba Causeway in Mumbai

Colaba Causeway in Bombay has some of the cutest and most fun accessories and bags… girls who are interested in fashion, make your clothes have fun with fabrics; it’s your first step and so much more economical!

What are your favorite, must-have fashion accessories?

Tanya: Must-haves are my favorite part- a pair of nude heels. It’s a no brainer when you don’t understand what shoes to wear… wear nude!

A well-fitted pair of jeans, a boyfriend jacket (jacket the size of a guy’s). It’s so fun and just adds so much character.

A little black dress… all girls need that. Trust me, all girls, even girls who think they are a lil’ overweight, need it to sit in their wardrobe to encourage them to lose weight and wear it one day!

A nice tan sling bag is a must!

Which do you enjoy styling best- photoshoots, films, or celebrity appearances?

Tanya: I love working on films. I would say it’s just so much fun working a particular character and dressing that character. Film is so electrifying; it’s hundreds of people coming together to bring a story together for the whole world to watch. What could be more exciting than that?

What is your go-to outfit for a busy workday?

Tanya: I’m a moody dresser and my friends seem to think that I wear the tiniest clothes made in India! I live in Bombay, it’s hot all year round. I’m always in shorts that I pair up with a mul shirt or sometimes a cute summer retro dress- love polka dots- maybe a beautiful fun maxi dress!

What is the biggest fashion mistake most Indian women make, and what can they do to fix it?

Tanya: Wearing the wrong silhouettes. Every woman has her own charm and she can look good if she dresses right! Some simple rules:

  • If you are on the heavier side, wear vertical stripes. Horizontal stripes give way more width; vertical will make you look taller and slimmer.
  • When you are not sure, close your eyes and wear black. It never goes wrong.
  • Color blocking doesn’t mean red dress, green shoes, and blue bag. That just makes you look stupid! There has to be some harmony. You could mix warm colors and block your outfit, or use all cool colors.
  • Gladiator shoes are over, please stop wearing them! You can wear strappy thong sandals instead. They look much nicer and understated.
  • Pease get rid of those matching track pants and jackets– that is just all kinds of tacky! Just because celebrities wear them doesn’t make them cool.
  • Wear your clothes generously and wear things you’re comfortable in, not because it’s in fashion. You make a statement in what you wear. Be innovative, you don’t have to always wear what is in fashion. I love vintage, it never goes out of style…
  • Boys are the best when they keep it casual and effortless. Those tight-fit body hugging t-shirts need to be thrown out; a man is a man when he looks like a man!

Anything else?

Tanya: Fashion is so much fun! You have to love it and live it and just be happy and play with colors and have themes and dress up. Don’t feel scared to be judged. Who cares if people think you’re absolutely bonkers? They don’t know you’re actually an artist! It takes the world some time to appreciate art. I’ve given a lot of gyaan [knowledge] in this interview, so I’m not gonna say more, just follow all my pointers and you’ll be good to go!

Thanks, Tanya!

I am so proud and excited to present our very own Jolie Asie exclusive fashion and style interview with the very lovely Teena Ahuja Kapoor, Bollywood celebrity stylist, Mumbai-based image consultant, and Priyanka Chopra’s former personal stylist.

Without further ado!

Meg: Tell us about your average work-day: what do you do, who do you meet, where do you go?

Teena: I am a freelance stylist so my days vary drastically…. but an average day involves a lot of emails and phone calls to designers, productions houses and celebrity teams. As the shoot/ appearances get closer that’s where the madness begins from sourcing to fittings and finally the shoot. Some days I walk into a lot of local stores and markets to keep an eye on the latest trends and pick up accessories.

You were Priyanka Chopra’s personal stylist and gave her gorgeous outfits. Where did you buy those amazing clothes? And are there any less expensive brands you recommend for PC’s fans who want to dress like her?

Teena: I could go on and on with this one. Firstly, I must say that Priyanka Chopra has an amazing eye for beautiful things herself. There have been a number of occasions where she has been spotted wearing clothes from her personal wardrobe – from being in a Dolce and Gabbana dress to a Shahab Durazi outfit or Abercrombie and Fitch track pants (like you mentioned in your blog).  On other occasions, clothes/accessories have been bought or sourced from a host of designers which could be from one of our most well-known Indian or International brand or even a high street one.

Style is not about spending big bucks. Its about picking the right piece. There are a lot of high street brands available worldwide nowadays. Brands like Mango, Zara, Forever 21 and the likes are the best place to get a lot of stylish clothes for less. Also every city has great street shopping too, their local markets, its just about being patient and finding the right things there too.

What was it like working closely with Priyanka Chopra and other celebs?

Teena: I have worked the longest with Priyanka Chopra on a very close level. She is the most patient, intelligent and mature person for her age. For the 15 months I styled her there was not one time that the team was led to believe that we are at work. There was always a calm and fun vibe being around her. PC as we called her, was very open to new ideas and not the one to play by the rules (in a good way). She loves interacting with the entire team and getting everyone’s view. That’s the reason she loves being in touch with her fans throughout the world via twitter or her website www.iampriyankachopra.com.

What are your future goals and ambitions as a stylist and image consultant?

Teena: I go with the flow. I do not like stressing over the future. What’s the point right??? And anyway it all depends on how one molds it. As of now I am very content with the way my work is. Sometimes, I’m at a shoot and other times promoting a luxury brand. I reckon if all goes smooth then thats how it shall be in the future too.

What’s your go-to outfit for an evening out?

Teena: Oh this is an easy one. I am a hardcore jean person. A pair of dark blue skinny jeans with a black fitted shirt or if I gotta be more formal then an LBD (little black dress) and a statement piece of jewelry.

What do you think is the biggest fashion mistake most Indian women make, and how can they fix it?

Teena: Not knowing their body type. There are a lot of women I see/ know who spend all the money in the world and still don’t look good. They need to realize that ‘less is more’ ! Find out what your best and thinnest part of your body is and work around that.

Keeping it classy with one or maximum two loud things in your look is what you should go for. Having your bag, shoes, clothes, neckpiece, rings, bracelets, earrings all screaming out for attention is not the way anyone should go. Just saying all that out loud gave me a headache (haha) so imagine seeing all of it on one person. That’s a big NO-NO!

What’s your number one style tip for women who are petite (short or small)?

Teena: HIGH HEELS!!!!!  And not wearing skirts that are mid-length. It’s all about creating the illusion of longer legs and that can be done two ways. One by wearing short skirts/shorts with high heels (ofcourse) and the other by wearing a maxi dress (again with high heels- of course :)) Wearing a piece that is half way down your thigh or upto the knee cuts short your legs and will make you look shorter.

Who are your fashion inspirations and muses?

Teena: Really! C’mon this is just an unfair question! There are like a million of them! But I’m still gonna try -it could be someone like a Victoria Beckham’s classic but hot look, a Tarun Tahiliani’s timeless yet elegant Sari or even a kid on the street wearing something funky! I’m just open to it all!

If you could be a stylist for any one person in the world, who would it be?

Teena: Okay! I’m gonna give you one each bollywood and hollywood. Sridevi ( my all time fav.) and Jennifer Lopez!!!!

Our readers are regular girls with regular budgets. Do you have any tips for them to save money and still look glam?

Teena: Yeah of course! Pick items that are solid colors. In that case you can mix and match them up with a host of things in your wardrobe, For instance, you own a white shirt- you can wear it with a short denim skirt to give it an edgy look, a short flare skirt to give it a flirty look, pair of well fitted jeans for your classic chic look, a knee length fitted skirt for a more formal look, fun denim or bright colored shorts to give it a funky day look, throw on a blazer and get you serious work look an so on. See what I mean! Go for the solids and invest more in fun. playful accessories like shoes, bags, jewelry etc. coz then you can mix and match them in hundreds of different ways and have that many more looks!

Thanks, Teena!

Want to learn how to dress like Bollywood actress and star Deepika Padukone? Here is your comprehensive how-to guide on Deepika Padukone’s fashion favorites.

BE SURE TO CHECK OUT our How to Look Like Guide on Deepika Padukone to learn about her beauty secrets and makeup mantras!

Deepika’s style is that of a modern, working woman who is at heart still just a girl. She has a few go-to colors that she loves to use: white, sea green, and tan.

To get Deepika’s fresh white look, stock up on white blouses, camis, and tanks. Pair with an elegant skirt and matching heels, or jeans with a brown belt. Try Calvin Klein and Michael Kors.

She’s a big fan of belts and will unfailingly pair her jeans with dark brown belts and her dresses with thin or wide tan belts.

There’s no denying Deepika loves sea-green! Look for a casual zippie sweater in a foamy green color at American Apparel. For evenings out, try a bandage dress or bubble dress like Deepika (cinch it with a tan belt and match with tan sandal heels). If the color is hard to find in Western clothes, seek it out at Indian ethnic-wear boutiques.

Deepika will often step out with a black or white blazer over a blouse or tank. Look for blazers at large department stores (i.e. Macy’s and Nordstrom) to find a wide selection of materials and cuts. Try three-quarter length blazers for a more casual look.

You’ll notice Deepika pairs all of her day looks with a large tan handbag. Tan, beige, taupe, or camel colored purses are excellent for matching with any outfit at all because they are classy and very understated. Good choice, Deepika!

Every girl has quirky accessories she uses to have a little fun with an otherwise plain outfit. Deepika’s are her red shoes– flats and pumps. Add a pop of color to your white-based outfits as an unexpected surprise!

Deepika’s summer style is simple: flirty, girly dresses paired with sandals- either flat or with some heel. She’ll wear floaty dresses with the requisite brown belt. Deepika’s favorite pair of earrings have to be her small, thick metallic hoops; they are a sweet touch and go well with both dressy and casual looks. Finish the look with a few chunky metallic bracelets and bangles.

When on the move or in colder weather, Deepika keeps her layering simple by sticking with white and tan. Pair white tanks and blouses with white cardigans with a subtle pattern (i.e. stripes or block colors). Pair with only one piece of jewelry: a chunky necklace, drop earrings, or glasses. Finish the look with a brown belt and medium-to-light wash jeans and sandals or Ugg boots. As you can see, Deepika plays it very safe… and so hardly goes wrong.

And that’s how you can use fashion and styling to dress just like Bollywood celebrity Deepika Padukone. Let us know what you think and if there are any other celebrities you’d like to learn more about!

Want to learn how to dress like Bollywood actress and star Priyanka Chopra? Here is your comprehensive how-to guide on Priyanka Chopra’s fashion favorites.

BE SURE TO CHECK OUT our How To Look Like Guide on Priyanka Chopra to learn about her beauty secrets and makeup mantras!

Don’t miss our exclusive Jolie Asie interview with Priyanka Chopra’s former personal stylist, Teena Ahuja Kapoor! Teena styled many of the looks seen below.

Priyanka’s style is very summery and very sexy. She knows she has an incredible figure and loves to show it off.

Priyanka attended high school in the United States and its influence on her wardrobe selections shows. For casual day wear, Priyanka loves to buy and wear clothes from Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister.

From these stores she wears logo tees and shirts, ripped jeans, jackets, tanks, track pants, you name it! She’ll also on occasion slip into a sexier casual top from Guess Jeans. She’ll pair her A&F tops and bottoms with sneakers, flip flops, or funky heels.

Priyanka’s day wear outing clothes are perhaps my favorites of hers- they are stunning and incredibly flattering! Look for solid-colored fitted cotton or jersey dresses and tops (try online at topshop.com and shopbop.com).

Pair the dresses with a well-fitting strapless bra, strappy sandals, a thin belt if cinching is needed, and a few silver bracelets. Pair tops with short light-wash denim skirts from (you got it) PC’s beloved Abercrombie & Fitch.

Day and night, Priyanka likes to try out different fabrics and cuts. Not at all one for layering, she prefers one-piece outfits, be they dresses or jumpsuits and rompers, as seen above. This style is particularly good for emulating in hot weather or when you find color-coordinating or layering exhausting and bothersome. Play it safe like Priyanka by keeping your color schemes cohesive and simple.

Now to her evening or night wear. Priyanka is (in)famous for her love of short, fitted dresses. It’s true that she will attend award shows or interviews in the occasional gown, but her favorite fall-backs are seen above. Personally, I think the dresses look fabulous on her- glamorous and oh, so attractive!

Notice her consistency: she likes her dresses to have a subtle drape in the front, with a snug fit in the chest and looser fit in the waist. To get Priyanka’s dress style, try BCBG, French Connection, and Alice+Olivia. She usually pairs her dresses with one of her two favorites pairs of shoes: silver Louboutin sandals and open-toed Jimmy Choo pumps. Look for heels that are metallic or glittery to match with all of your evening dresses.

As for ethnic wear, Priyanka rather religiously sticks with saris and anarkalis designed by Bollywood’s darling designer Manish Malhotra, pictured with her above. When picking a sari like Priyanka’s, look for sheer materials, tiny metallic blouses with plunging necklines, and go for a revealing drape. Pair with large drop earrings and a select few bangles to finish the look.

Last but not least, accessories. Priyanka is often photographed wearing aviators (try Ray Bans if you are going for the celeb look). On casual days she’ll wear a few rings, bracelets, and silver bangles on her left arm. When dressing up, she will wear bare-minimal accessories: a large ring OR a luxury watch OR a pair of earrings.

Priyanka has beautiful hands and tends to keep her nails long and painted with a french manicure.

And that’s how you can use fashion and styling to dress just like Bollywood celebrity Priyanka Chopra. Let us know what you think and if there are any other celebrities you’d like to learn more about!

Want to learn how to look and dress like Bollywood actress and star Bipasha Basu? Here is your comprehensive how-to guide on Bipasha Basu’s beauty secrets, makeup mantras, and fashion favorites.

Bipasha Basu came into India’s spotlight after winning a Ford Supermodel contest in 1996. Since then she has become a popular Bollywood actress and fitness spokesperson. Bipasha is famous for being one of the first “dusky”-skinned beauties to find mainstream success in modern Bollywood. She was also known for her “Indian supercouple” status with now ex-boyfriend John Abraham, a fellow model and actor.

Bipasha Basu is one of Bollywood’s most outspoken advocates for a healthy diet and exercise. She’s even released a workout DVD! She says she is “completely into workouts” because she “believe[s] in being healthy and it’s not about just looking good…. That’s the reason [she is] so much into fitness”.

She advises her fans to work out at least four times a week for an hour a day. She likes to hit the gym or swim laps in the swimming pool. Her devotion to exercise keeps her from having to follow a strict diet: “I just work out like crazy in the gym and keep on my toes the whole day,” she says. Bips prefers the grazing method, eating six healthful small meals a day as opposed to three large meals. Proponents of the grazing method believe it prevents overeating and helps stimulate the metabolism.

In addition to eating well and working out, Bipasha told Female First Magazine that she thinks it’s important to get “a minimum of 7-8 hours of sleep a day” in order to “look fit and beautiful”. For relaxation, she goes for a massage twice a week.

Generous with her fans, Bipasha posted her beauty secrets on her own personal website. She recommends drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water a day, applying a sunscreen to protect skin from UV damage, and keeping skin clean by removing makeup thoroughly at the end of the day. For beautiful skin, Bipasha recommends eating fish, barley, nuts, seeds, sprouts, yogurt, and fruits and vegetables- especially of the leafy green variety. She warns against eating sugar, packaged foods, and succumbing to crash diets; these are all skin-damagers!

For her skin, Bipasha likes to avoid wearing foundation on off-days. She told the Times of India that she thinks it’s crucial to “spend on quality beauty products” instead of buying those that are cheaply made. At night, she massages almond oil around her eyes for skin nourishment and to keep them wrinkle-free.

There are three basic rules to follow when applying makeup to look like Bipasha Basu.

1) Cat eye liner/winged eye liner

Bipasha is well-known for her habitual cat-eye or winged-eye liner makeup looks. I recommend using a black liquid or gel eyeliner to get the above makeup. Follow the angle of your lower lashline to draw a short line upward and outward from the corner of your eye. Connect this line with a thick black line drawn over your upper lashes. Fill in the curved triangle, and voila!

2) Coral or pink lipgloss

Bipasha loves to wear lipglosses in coral and pink shades; these are youthful choices that go well with her sexy and flirty outfits. To get lips like Bips, try MAC Plushglass in Ample Pink, MAC Lustreglass in Love Nectar, and MAC Tinted Lipglass in Lychee Luxe. Doesn’t she look pretty?

3) False eyelashes

Because Bipasha’s makeup is all about her eyes, you’ll want to bring big drama and big lashes. If you have long lashes, you might be able to do without out falsies, but if you’re really trying to look like Bipasha, they will help. Try false lashes by Ardell. Follow up with curling your lashes and applying mascara.

Like many Bollywood actresses, Bipasha takes care of her hair with regular oil massages.

She tends to keep her hair a little past shoulder length, a cut flattering for a woman with her musculature and height. Her hair is cut with a face frame beginning past her chin for interest. Bipasha is almost always seen with side bangs sweeping over the right half of her forehead. She experiments with her styling, wearing her hair curled, blown-out, with beachy waves, or up with teasing for volume in the back.

Bipasha’s naturally black hair is usually dyed brown and streaked with light brown highlights. This medium brown shade looks great on her dark skin.

Bipasha has three different wardrobe looks she likes to choose from: sexy, flirty, and casual bohemian. Bright, jewel-toned colors suit her dark skin best; you’ll rarely see her wearing colors like tan, light gray, or navy blue.

To emulate her sexy style, don’t think twice before checking out your nearest Bebe store. Bipasha is the ultimate Bebe girl! Think bold, bright colors, short fitted dresses, and high (colorful) pumps. Keep your accessories at a minimum by wearing a small pair of earrings and a ring only.

To get Bipasha’s flirty style, stay in Bebe or else take a trip to Forever 21. Pair short, girly dresses with a wide belt to cinch the waistline and chunky bracelets. Don’t forget to wear open-toed pumps to finish the look!

Bipasha is not often photographed wearing casual looks, but when she is, she’ll be seen wearing loose tops or summer dresses (a relief after those tight dresses, I’m sure) worn over jeans or leggings. Bips will often finish the outfit with metallic sandals or heels. She’ll make her look bohemian by wearing an assortment of colorful bracelets and bands, long beaded necklaces, or by carrying a hobo bag. Don’t forget to pack an oversized cotton cardigan for windy days!

Interestingly enough, when she does don ethnic wear, Bipasha tends to go in the other color direction: she often chooses saris, lahengas, and salwars in soft blues, creams, and pinks. It’s a gorgeous change from her brighter dresses, and a smart way to experiment with new colors.

And that’s how you can use diet, exercise, makeup, hair styling, and fashion to look just like Bollywood celebrity Bipasha Basu. Let us know what you think and if there are any other celebrities you’d like to learn more about!

Want to learn how to look and dress like Bollywood actress and star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan? Here is your comprehensive how-to guide on Aishwarya Rai’s beauty secrets, makeup mantras, and fashion favorites.

Aishwarya Rai won the title of Miss World in 1994 and went on to become possibly the most famous Indian film (Bollywood) actress of all time. Julia Roberts, Oprah Winfrey, and countless media outlets from around the world have declared Aishwarya “the most beautiful woman in the world”. Today she is married to another actor (and Bollywood royalty), Abhishek Bachchan, and continues to act in films.

Aishwarya is famous for her no-nonsense beauty routine: she eats and lives healthily. To keep her figure in shape and her skin clear and smooth, she avoids smoking, alcohol, and highly-processed foods. Aishwarya’s advice to fans for looking good is to “avoid oily, unhealthy food, [and to] exercise,” as well as to “eat your breakfast… the most important meal of the day.”

Aishwarya, or Ash as she is nicknamed, starts her morning with hot water mixed with honey and lemon. This is a great way to kick-start your detox at the start of the day and get your metabolism revved up. Be sure to use freshly squeezed lemon, and, for extra health benefits, try active raw Manuka honey. This special antibacterial honey has not been processed like regular honey sold in grocery stores and so retains its naturally occurring healing properties.

Throughout the day, Aishwarya keeps hydrated by drinking up to eight glasses of water. Drinking water keeps your skin moist and helps your body flush blemish-causing toxins away for good.

For meals, Aishwarya eats plentiful amounts of fruits and vegetables. For healthy skin and hair, make sure you are getting enough daily portions of antioxidant vitamins C and E, as well as B-vitamins. Eat plenty of leafy greens (kale, spinach), carrots, peppers, oranges, and berries. She regularly eats home-cooked Indian food. Says Ash: “I can survive on dal chawal and vegetables.”

Aishwarya loves to use ancient Indian beauty secrets to care for her skin. As a cleanser/exfoliator, mix gram flour (besan) with haldi (turmeric) and milk into a paste. Rub gently over the skin and wash thoroughly. Massage fresh yogurt into your skin as a natural moisturizer. Finally, to pamper youself, apply a cucumber face mask made of crushed fresh cucumber. Sit back, relax, and wash off after you’ve enjoyed this cool and refreshing skin treat!

Aishwarya washes her face three times a day with a baby soap and is careful to apply a moisturizer every night before sleeping. Remember to massage your moisturize into your skin in gentle, upward strokes to fight wrinkles (this goes for your neck, too!).

For her every day makeup looks, Aishwarya keeps it natural. She will wear a peach, pink, or tan eye shadow, black eyeliner, and mascara on her eyes. She is quite diligent about wearing foundation and concealer, so her skin always looks fresh and dewy. She will apply a warm pink or peach blush on the apples of her cheeks and match it with a neutral, “my lips but better” shade of pinky-brown or peachy-brown lipstick.

Aishwarya once stated in an interview that the brands of makeup she preferred were MAC, Lakme, Revlon and Maybelline.

Among fragrances, Aishwarya wears Happy by Clinique and Eternity by Calvin Klein.

There are three basic rules to follow when applying makeup to look like Aishwarya Rai.

1) Keep your lips natural

It will be a rare day indeed when you see Aishwarya wearing an unusual or out-there lipcolor. She knows her lips are beautiful without needing to draw excessive attention to them, so she applies lipsticks of “my lips but better” (MLBB) shades. Try lipsticks/glosses that are pink-based or brown-based, like MAC Lipstick in Twig or MAC Tinted Lipglass in Chai.

2) Get those light eyes

Her stand-out feature is her stunning aqua-blue eyes. You can’t emulate Ash without going light! If you are naturally dark-eyed, try wearing colored contacts in shades of gray or green. I don’t recommend blue contacts for Asians or Indians, simply because they tend to look unnatural. A Bollywood brand favorite for colored contacts is Freshlook Colorblends.

3) Soft, feminine eye makeup

As it is with her clothes, Aishwarya knows what colors work for her in makeup. She avoids harsh makeup looks, preferring her eyeshadows to be blended to softness. She looks gorgeous in pink or peach eyeshadows paired with a gel eyeliner with a pop of color (a signature technique of MAC makeup artist Mickey Contractor). To get her look, try MAC Eye Shadow in Expensive Pink and MAC Fluidline in Waveline.

Throughout her career, Aishwarya has sported hair in all sorts of colors and shapes, but she’ll always go back to her favorite chocolate brown locks. If you are dying your hair, be sure to remember your eyebrows too! Aishwarya’s hair is usually blow-dried straight, blow-dried straight then curled, or given a blow-out. She always parts her hair at the right side and keeps the front pieces of her hair trimmed past her chin for some layers. The key to getting hair like Aishwarya Rai is to keep it down, keep it clean, and keep it away from your beautiful face.

In an interview given years ago, Aishwarya said that among clothes she prefers structured jackets and form-fitting gowns for formal attire, and chikan salwar kameez (a Lucknow specialty) or jeans and a t-shirt for casual wear. She said she “hate[d] anything that’s too fussy and frilly”. Looks like her tastes haven’t changed!

A list of her illustrious favorite designers includes Rohit Bal, Manish Malhotra, Ritu Beri, Armani Prive, Shahab Durrazi, Neeta Lulla, Sabyasachi, Lanvin, and Elie Saab.

Aishwarya’s look is very consistent and very timeless. She is never one to take risks and tends to prefer certain sets of colors and cuts for her body.

As far as ethnic wear goes, Aishwarya favors two different color families: pale pastels and rich earth colors.

The pale pastels include pink, peach, tan, blue, yellow, and white. She tends to wear these colors with salwars on quiet occasions (not shown here) and matches her pastels with silver jewelry. She wore these colors to great effect in her 2000 film “Dhai Akshar Prem Ke”.

The rich earth colors include dark green, maroon, deep purple, gold and cream. Ash often opts for these darker colors in her (Sabyasachi) saris.

For her Western outfits, Aishwarya almost unfailingly falls back on two easy colors to work with: black and white. She LOVES tailored black jackets and owns them in practically every material you can think of- satin, velvet, lightweight wool, silk. To get her look, find a neat black jacket at The Limited or Nordstrom. Be sure to get it tailored to your size- you’ll want it to fit perfectly or else you will look sloppy! Wear your jacket with a smart black top (or nothing inside!) and black pants. Accessorize with delicate jewelry or a scarf.

Aishwarya also likes to keep it simple in floaty white tops worn over dark-wash jeans. Pair your favorite dark blue jeans with a breezy, loose white bohemian top from J. Crew or H&M. Ash, a quintessential “adult” in her style sense, likes to wear heels with casual outfits, so find yourself some open-toed tan pumps or close-toed black ankle booties. For bags, try Louis Vuitton or go classic with a leather purse from Tod’s.

In the summer time, Aishwarya looks beautiful in printed, structured summer dresses. She keeps the colors mild (you won’t see her wearing neon!) and womanly. Find dresses like Aishwarya’s at Ann Taylor Loft and Banana Republic. Pair with sandals or wedges, small earrings and a metallic watch.

Aishwarya has some jewelry staples, the first and foremost of which are her luxury watches (she is a brand ambassador for Longines). Invest in a fancy one by keeping an eye on sales at stores like Von Maur or Nordstrom. She also will wear a ring or two; she is frequently photographed wearing a particular large ring set with a cream-white stone along with her wedding ring. Aishwarya likes to don a thin metallic or diamond bracelet and small jeweled earrings. Lastly, she’s often spotted wearing huge black sunglasses, as seen above, a favorite accessory of celebrities.

And that’s how you can use diet, exercise, makeup, hair styling, and fashion to look just like Bollywood celebrity Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Let us know what you think and if there are any other celebrities you’d like to learn more about!
